As part of its effort at promoting the countryโ€™s rich cultural heritage; a popular private educational service provider, Model Preparatory School, held its Language/Arts and Culture Day celebration on Wednesday 9th Nov., 2022.

The event was held at the school premises, located at 4, Akinlade Close, Iju Ishaga, Ifako Ijaiye Local Government, Lagos state and it was doubtless, an allusion to the countryโ€™s rich cultural diversity.

The occasion featured pupils within the age range of three and eleven; dressed in colourful native attires, reflecting the cultural affinity of the six geo-political zones of Nigeria. Also on display, were local delicacies, cultural dances and dramatic performances in Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba cultural backgrounds.

Mrs Anighoro Anne, Headmistress of the school, explained the importance of the event which according to her helps students to develop a sense of appreciation for every element of our diverse culture. โ€œNigeria is one of the most culturally diversed countries in the world. This heterogeneity rests on ethnic, religious, linguistic and historic differences. That is why a day like this is set aside for it’s celebration in our schools, for our children to learn more about our culture. We have discovered as a school, that a lot of students are disconnected from their cultural backgrounds; hence, the reason for an occasion like this. This is an event the school has successfully celebrated every year as a way of connecting students to their roots,โ€ she said.

Special guest of the occasion, Comrade Oyekanmi Julius, the PTA Chairman described the event as remarkable and lauded the school for itโ€™s commitment to the promotion of culture.

โ€œWe must highlight and promote our culture, not just as a matter of individual preference or style but collectively, as our national identity. I applaud the organisers, Model Preparatory School, for serving as custodians of our rich cultural legacy, which is one of our resources,โ€™ he opined.

The proprietor of the school, Hon. Femi Ogunsanwo, in his speech said the aim is to teach the students unity despite our cultural diversity as a country. He said it is necessary for each citizen to de- emphasize our ethnic egoism, let go off our differences, emphasize those things that bind us together as a people of common destiny and live together as one indivisible peopleโ€ฆ “though tribes and tongues may differ, in brotherhood we stand”.

โ€œOur cultures are beautiful and I can see beautiful days ahead for our country”.
He commended the students for their performances and urged them to learn from different cultures displayed at the event.

He also appreciated parents for their efforts and support, adding that the school would continue to teach the students all-around education.

Hon. Femi described the school as being known for excellence in both academic and extra curricular activities. According to him, the school, which was established about thirty-seven years ago has been able to produce so many great minds because of its outstanding performance. He ended his speech with a promise that the school would continue to aim at greater strides and achievements.
